Solid wood furniture is purchased for years, and often for generations. The good news is that wooden furniture care is simpler than it seems. You don't need specialized preparations or much time. All it takes is a few habits and knowing what to avoid. This guide applies to furniture finished with lacquer, such as our beds, chests of drawers, wardrobes and desks.

First, check how the furniture is finished

The care method depends on the finish of the wood. Oiled furniture requires re-oiling from time to time, and furniture lacquered they have a protective coating on the surface and are much less demanding.

We finish our furniture semi-matt acrylic varnish, and colored versions with certified water-based paints that meet the EN standard 71-3. The varnish protects the wood against water and dirt, so simple wiping is enough for everyday use. They do not need to be oiled or waxed.

Daily cleaning of wooden furniture

  1. Remove dust with a dry, soft cloth, for example cotton or delicate microfiber. Wipe in the direction of the grain.
  2. Remove dirt with a slightly damp cloth, well squeezed. You can add a little mild dishwashing liquid to the water.
  3. Wipe the surface dry immediately. Water left on wood is the most common cause of dull stains.

This is enough for everyday use. There is no need to use aerosol furniture preparations with silicone. They may leave a greasy film that attracts dust.

What to avoid when caring for yourself?

  • Wet cloths and long soaking. Wood does not like standing water, especially at edges and joints.
  • Milk, powders and sharp sponges. They scratch the paint and matt the surface.
  • Solvents, alcohol, acetone and agents containing ammonia. They may damage the coating.
  • Steamers. The hot steam penetrates the wood and can damage the finish.
  • New products tested immediately in a visible place. If you want to try something, test it on the back wall or underneath.

We write about the care of kitchen and cabinet fronts separately in the article how to care for wooden furniture fronts.

Sun, humidity and heating

Solid wood is a natural material that "breathes". It reacts to air humidity and temperature, so it is worth providing it with stable conditions.

  • Air humidity. It is best when the room temperature is approx 40–60%. In winter, when the radiators are heating, the air can be very dry, so it is worth considering a humidifier. By the way, it's good for you too.
  • Distance from radiators. Do not place furniture right next to a radiator, fireplace or air conditioning vent.
  • Sun. Wood naturally changes shade when exposed to light. Over time, the oak darkens slightly and becomes warmer in color. This is normal and adds character to it. To keep the color changing evenly, rearrange the decorations on the countertop from time to time, and use curtains or blinds in very sunny rooms.

How to protect furniture from scratches?

  • Foot pads chairs, lamps and decorations prevent scratches on countertops.
  • Coasters for cups and flower pots protect against traces of moisture and heat. Never place a hot dish directly on the counter.
  • Felt furniture pads they protect not only the floor, but also the furniture when moved.
  • When moving a piece of furniture, lift it, instead of pulling. This especially applies to beds and wardrobes.
  • Empty the drawers before moving the chest of drawers.

What to do if a stain appears?

  • Spilled drink: immediately collect the liquid with a paper towel, wipe it with a damp cloth and wipe dry.
  • Fat trace: wipe with a cloth moistened with water and a drop of dishwashing liquid, then clean water and dry.
  • Traces of a felt-tip pen or crayon in a child's room: start with a damp cloth and a mild liquid. Do not reach for solvents.
  • Deeper scratch or paint damage: do not try to sand yourself. Contact us and we will advise you how to fix it.

Fittings and drawers

Our chests of drawers, wardrobes and display cabinets have fittings Blum with soft closing. They do not require lubrication. All you need to do is wipe the guides from dust once in a while and you won't overload the drawers. If the door stops closing evenly, it is usually enough to slightly adjust the hinge with a screwdriver.

A short cheat sheet

  • Dirt: slightly damp cloth and dry immediately.
  • Avoid: wet cloths, harsh chemicals, solvents and steam.
  • Conditions: humidity 40–60%, away from the radiator.
