Any movement at night and you immediately hear a "creak". Creaking bed it can wake you up, irritate you and take away the pleasure of rest. The good news is that in most cases this can be remedied, and when choosing a new bed you can almost avoid the problem completely. Below we explain where the squeaks come from and what to pay attention to when buying.

Where does the bed creak come from?

The bed creaks when its elements rub against each other or move slightly. The most common causes are:

  • loose connections frame, legs or headboard,
  • sagging frame, whose slats rub against the frame,
  • no support in the middle wide bed,
  • uneven floor, through which one leg "hangs",
  • metal elements rubbing against wood, for example screws and angles,
  • humidity changes, which causes the wood to work slightly.

What to do when the bed is already squeaking?

  1. Find the source of the sound. Remove the mattress and press the frame, legs and frame slats in turn. This way you can easily determine which place is squeaking.
  2. Tighten the connections, if the bed is assembled with screws. This is the most common and simplest solution.
  3. Place felt pads under your feet. They equalize the pressure on the floor and quieten movements.
  4. Check the frame. If the slats are rubbing against the frame, thin strips of felt at the contact points will help.
  5. Level the bed. If the floor is uneven, place a pad under the shorter leg.

If the bed still squeaks, the problem is usually with the structure itself. Then it is worth considering replacing it with a more solid model.

How to choose a bed that won't squeak?

1. Solid wood. The solid wood frame is stiff and does not deform like board elements. This is the basis of a quiet bed.

2. Carpentry joints instead of screws. Our double beds are connected using technology socket-pin, i.e. a traditional carpentry connection in which the elements fit tightly into each other. They have no visible screws or screws, and the fittings allow the bed to be folded and unfolded many times without losing stability.

3. Center support. In a wide double bed, the center of the frame must have a support. Our beds have double beds six legs: four in the corners and two in the middle. They prevent the frame from sagging and reduce the risk of squeaking.

4. Solid frame. Frame made of solid, thick pine wood 2–2,4 cm it is included with our beds. In double beds, it consists of permanently glued frames, so the slats do not move relative to each other.

5. High lifting capacity. The load capacity says a lot about the stiffness of the structure. Our single beds have load capacity 200 kg, and double 400 kg. This is a reserve that prevents the bed from working during everyday use.

6. Thick legs. Cross-sectional legs 5,7 × 5,7 cm they stand stably on the floor and do not wobble from side to side.

Does the mattress matter?

Yes. An old-type spring mattress can creak on its own, regardless of the bed. If the sound is coming from the mattress and not the frame, you may want to consider replacing it with a foam or pocket mattress. Also choose the thickness of the bed mattress. We recommend thick mattresses for our beds 10–22 cm.

How to keep your bed quiet?

  • Every few months, check whether the connections are stable.
  • Do not jump on the bed or sit abruptly on the edge of the frame.
  • When moving the bed, lift it instead of dragging it along the floor.
  • Maintain stable air humidity in the bedroom, approx 40–60%.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the new bed squeak?
Most often due to an uneven floor or loose connections after installation. Check the level and tighten the components.

How to silence a squeaking frame?
Place strips of felt where the slats meet the frame and check that the frame has support in the center.

Do wooden beds creak more than metal ones?
NO. A solid wood bed with good joinery is usually quieter than a metal bed where metal rubs against metal.

What load capacity should a quiet double bed have?
The higher, the better. Our double beds have load capacity 400 kg, which gives a large reserve of stiffness.
